Stage Director

Chiara Muti

“Stage direction was entrusted to Chiara Muti, who placed special emphasis on the histrionic expressiveness of the characters. Her meticulous work was reflected in every scene, where every gesture, whether from an extra or a protagonist, was carefully crafted. Her interpretation of the characters’ psychology, inspired by Handel’s own score, was remarkable.”
OperaWire
“Chiara Muti dazzled with her imaginative staging, revealing both creativity and ample erudition.”

Chiara Muti, actress and author, has most recently established herself as one of the leading opera stage directors of her generation. Her work is inventive, well-researched, modern and classic at the same time. After directing several theater productions, she made her opera debut in 2012 at the Ravenna Festival, directing Hindemith’s Sancta Susanna, conducted by Riccardo Muti. This was followed, in 2013, by Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas for Opera di Roma and Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice for Opéra National de Montpellier. In 2014, she returned to Opera di Roma to direct Puccini’s Manon Lescaut. In 2016, she opened the season at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari with Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and, in 2018, she directed the composer’s Così fan tutte, a new co-production between the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and the Vienna Staatsoper. 2021 brought a debut at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino with Puccini’s Madama Butterfly; in 2022, she directed Nicola Piovani’s Amorosa Presenza, a world premiere for the Teatro Verdi in Trieste, as well as Mozart’s Don Giovanni at Teatro Regio in Torino, thus concluding the Da Ponte Trilogy.

Muti attended the Piccolo Teatro School in Milan, directed by Giorgio Strehler. She made her theater debut in 1995 alongside Valeria Moriconi. Since then, she has been a protagonist in major Italian festivals and theaters, alternating the great Classical authors such as Euripides, Sophocles, Dante, Ariosto, Boccaccio, Shakespeare, Marivaux, Molnár, Pushkin, Pirandello, and Brecht with contemporary authors like Testori, Spadoni, Quintavalle, Cappuccio, and Mazzocut-Mis. She has been working in cinema since 1997, directed by Treves, Avati, Chiesa, Battiato, among the others. Since 1995, she has been actively collaborating with choreographer Micha van Hoecke and, since 2004 with actress and director Elena Bucci. As a singer and actress, she has interpreted the great classics by Monteverdi, Benda, Debussy, Honegger, Strauss, and collaborates on new creations by contemporary composers such as Corghi, Sollima, Betta, Ceccarelli, and Tamborrino.
